Very Nice Job

In an effort to build my ‘rapid development’ muscle, I decided to participate in the 2020 Global Game Jam. The Global Game Jam is an annual jam which takes place all over the world. This year, it was the biggest game jam thus far with 48,700 jammers creating 9,600 games at 934 sites in 118 countries.

What’s a game jam? A game jam is a gathering of people for the purpose of planning, designing, and creating one or more games within a short span of time, usually ranging between 24 and 72 hours.
From the moment they announced the theme, which this year was ‘Repair’, we had 48 hours to develop a game based on the theme.

Once they announced the theme, I found a couple people sitting next to me and asked them if they wanted to be partners. They agreed, we divied up the roles, brainstormed ideas, and went to work. One guy did the music, another did level design and writing, and I did the coding.
I’m happy to say we met the goal of developing a fairly interesting game within the timeframe.

Infotainment

While on-site, we showcased our work to the local IUPUI group, and also the world via livestream:

See below for some photos taken during the jam.

To me, participating in a hackathon/jam of any sort is tough but invigorating. In addition to getting more experience with rapid development, working with a group, and building my portfolio, I was inspired seeing the projects everybody developed. On top of all that, I met a lot of new acquiantances, which may be the most important thing.
